Be whoever you want to be!

For a long time, I have been encouraging all my clients to be themselves. I have lost count of the number of times I have said: "Just be yourself!".

Today I had a bit of a moment. After interviewing with my mentor and coach the other day, she said something to me at the end of the interview which got me thinking about how "Being myself" aligned with my "Reinventing YOU" work. And it's been rolling about in my mind all day.

While beavering away today it occurred to me that maybe it's time to stop saying that to people and to myself because it doesn't align with my work. If we can be anyone we want to be, why would we continue being the same old self we used to be?

What does "be yourself" mean exactly anyway?

And can anyone of us honestly say by deciding to "be yourself," you will be the same person, a day, a week, a month or a year from now? I know I couldn't, I am most definitely not the same person I was a year ago, and I know I am not the same person I was two weeks ago. I have had so many experiences even in that short time that has changed my view and shifted my awareness which can't help but shape who I choose to be now.

We are not fixed beings, we are fluid and flexible in our nature and persona, even the most stubborn of us! (That's me!) Inevitably then that means that we don't have to have one set way of "being yourself" we could have many different versions, at any time we want!

Yes, it's important to be true to yourself, to be authentic and all that other stuff, but that doesn't mean we have to keep being the same old self. We can rebuild our persona anytime while remaining true to who we are and continue to be authentic.

If I had continued to be the self I was ten years ago; I would be in a completely different place today, so why have I been buying into the idea that the best way forward is to "just be myself' and encourage all my clients to do the same! (lightbulb moment!)

After a little conversation with my own inner guru, I am dropping the "Just be yourself" mantra, for the new and reinvented mantra of "Just be whoever you want to be!", after all, that's what Reinventing You is all about!

Who do you want to be??
Who is hiding inside waiting to come to the surface??
What persona do you want to bring into the world??

This genuinely feels so much more liberating than "being yourself!"

Might need to go and do a little editing of my book, or maybe it's time for another book.

Love
Avril xx
